Shelter from Fallout – A Poem by Barbara Saxton

Shelter from Fallout

Perhaps it was all in my head.
After dinner (Persian eggplant dish
I took hours preparing), no hug,
no goodbye, not even Thank you
at the door.

You just up and left. Did you have too much
to carry, or maybe a headache?
More likely, your mind was on George,
waiting outside in silence, his car motor
already running.

On my way down the hall
to the bathroom, I banged the right wall
with my fist, first by accident, then again,
with more of a wind-up.

When these conflicts arise
between longtime friends, what hope
can we have for our nation,
the planet, a universe?

Apology calls the next morning
may not happen at all,
or come in far too late.

At the Cleveland Aquarium – A Poem by Barbara Saxton

At the Cleveland Aquarium

Warm words can fill our hearts
far quicker than cool heads. I hide
from darker thoughts, cresting waves
of doubt masked as false pride
that feasts on dregs of self-esteem.

On frequent visits to Cleveland Aquarium
my dad and I watched all manner
of sea creatures sliver, bob, cavort
in their wet prisons. We journeyed through
dank underwater labyrinths, emerging
into brash daylight by pools, where slick seals’
cheerful barks and crazy antics
nearly served as antidotes for murkiness.

I asked Daddy how so-called electric eels
could light their glass-walled homes
without benefit of cords or bulbs or switches.
He said the staff put batteries in all their food,
and I believed him, as I did
about so many things.

Baby Teeth – A Poem by Barbara Saxton

Baby Teeth

I knew this brave, brave boy
through his mother’s Facebook posts.
She’s my husband’s
second cousin, worlds removed.

The pain malignancy inflicts
traverses time and space.
It lingers like stale smoke, and hides
behind the cheerful poses,
brightly lighted Christmas trees.
A bald kid playing MineCraft
from his steel hospital bed,
each game perhaps his last.

Two weeks before he died,
Ethan lost a baby tooth:
a poignant touch of normalcy.
And if they could, the fairies
would have left a lifetime, not just coins,
beneath his pillow.

Some say he’s in heaven now.
For me, he smiles from online albums
clicked on far too many times,
as if my restless fingers had the power
to lure him back from death.

Consigning Mother’s Ring – A Poem by Barbara Saxton

Consigning Mother’s Ring

It shouldn’t have been willed to me.
I’m not an emerald and baguette diamond girl.
I’m set in steel, not platinum.

Technically, it’s called a dinner ring,
but we all knew it as a form
of circular apology
for cocktail hour abuse.
Advance payment, if you will,
for dessert wines
served up with purple bruises.

For twenty-three long years,
I kept it tucked away
in an emotionally
distant drawer.

But Sally’s house needs a new roof,
and something good should finally come
of all that ostentatious glinting.

Before leaving the consignment store,
I kissed those gems that once adorned
a hand now far beyond
her daughter’s loving grasp.
