Walking Away by John J Kazlauskas

Walking Away
by John J Kazlauskas

I thought it would be easy
to just walk away
with no explanation
like players after a game

they pass each other and say
nice game

but down deep they don’t mean it
how can you congratulate
someone

who just beat you
as if it was not that important
just a diversion of sorts
a way to pass the afternoon

but later when you are alone
sitting at the dinner table

you realize that it was
the hardest thing
you ever had to do.

Arriving by John J Kazlauskas

Arriving
by John J Kazlauskas

love in a small winter town
the train takes me there
chugging up the hill
through the piled snow
all around the fire

I arrive at noon
full of berries and small chocolates
for you I say
as I step down onto the platform

you turn
saying berries are expensive
and chocolate is neurotic
why would any women want these
as the train pulls away.
