Poetry Breakfast

Beginning March 20th, 2016 Poetry Breakfast will once again serve a little poetic nourishment every morning. Start your day with our new expanded menu. Poems, of course, are our specialty. But we will also be serving a fuller menu that includes poetry related creative non-fiction such as letters to and from poets, essays on poetry, and anything else that might feed a poet and poetry lover’s soul.

Beautiful Destruction – A Poem by Meghan O’Hern

Beautiful Destruction

She blows perfect rings of smoke
from her plum painted lips
I never learned to make dying beautiful
I have swallowed enough liquor
to confuse my body for an ocean
I do mad things for happiness
hoping to find beauty
in black coffee
and empty dinner plates

About the Poet:
Meghan O’Hern is a senior English and Creative Writing major at Bradley University. Her work centers on themes of mental health, feminism, and identity. She is thankful to Writehouse Ink for reading these poems before they were ready.

Venus – A Poem by Meghan O’Hern

Venus

I read once that Venus spins backwards
no one knows why
just accepting this fact

One day
you will learn to treat yourself this way
no longer constantly questioning
why
you must struggle
but instead
accepting
this as truth

When this day comes
you will find peace
and all will be well again
