Degrees of Separation – A Poem by Jane Williams

Degrees of Separation

When a child tweets
between falling bombs
Hello world
can you hear that?
thousands of followers
can
but when the question
is more personal
Are you there?
Can you help?
the simple
becomes
more difficult
to swallow,
her command
of English
suspect,
the pink hair bow
too arranged
and what to make
of the blonde
blue-eyed doll,
the university
educated mother’s
hand in it all.
Easier for us
to un
follow The Other,
interpret bias
for peace
as propaganda …

Climate Control – A Poem by Jane Williams

Climate Control

Respect the wind drawing machines,
give them enough slack to reinvent the wheel

(there’s a lot you can still do
with a piece of string and a small sail).

Embrace patience
which is the opposite
of waiting.

Be willing to learn how to Be
pre – effect.

Play around with algorithms
and pendulums,
molecules of hair and feathers,
shell grit …

Believe once again that dreaming
is the fulcrum of imagination.

Respond to change in kind,
from zephyrs to twisters.

Acknowledge the kinship patterns
of science and art –

the striving of each to reveal
veracious beauty in the universe,

the symbiotic relationship
between intellect and desire,

between your breathlessness
and these warming winter winds.
