After Szervanszky’s Wind Quintet, No. 1

breath pours
into bassoon body
purrs mountain maple

sixteenth note swirls
soar blueward

brass crackles in sunshine
cattails’
muddy roots

clarinet shadows
darken forest duff

mist
hugs lowlands—
evening
