The Spaces In Between
A poem by Margaret Adams Birth
The Spaces In Between
are arms held wide and ready to embrace
are dawn and dusk and all that’s hidden in their gray shades
are creeks that branch off streams that branch off rivers that flow to the ocean
are a jazz singer’s notes that zigzag but don’t settle on a pitch for much beyond a beat
are stone foundations belonging to homes that once were and now reveal little more than grassy mounds in the woods
are words unsaid and silent glances understood
are grandparents who raise grandchildren and children who raise each other
are all the shoulds and woulds and oxymorons like just war among those who pray for peace
are mountain valleys where people look toward rocky peaks and beyond them to something else that’s higher still and out of sight

Very nice. A poem that looks beyond itself “to something else that’s higher still and out of sight.”

Beautiful poem. Love the title, the open construction and silent repetition. So many senses touched upon. Reflective yet in the present moment.
