The Can Gatherer
A poem by Marietta Calvanico

The Can Gatherer

Perhaps it is a unique NY thing
digging through recycle pails
in search of nickel cans
and plastic bottles

It was Steve’s idea
to put them out separately
to make it easier, cleaner
He’s kind that way

So I shake them
as dry as I can
and bag them up
for recycling night

From my kitchen window
I can see her
picking up the refuse
from my comfortable life
