Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
A poem by Lois Perch Villemaire
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Winding wooden walkways—
elevated paths through the wetlands.
Vegetation is the haven
of large and small critters,
darting with a swoosh
through the plantings and grasses.
It was created to protect and preserve
the largest remaining stands
of beautiful bald cypress.
Birdwatchers flock with binoculars
to glimpse endangered
rare types in their native habitat.
No human voices are allowed
only echoes of croaks, moans,
songs of attraction.
Some lurk under water
laden with lily pads
or above in the towering trees.
A place to appreciate,
contemplate,
meditate—
nothing man-made
except the walkways.
