A poem by Susan Shea

Messages

A tiny hummingbird stopped short
stayed in place like a helicopter
on a mission

looked right into my kitchen window
right at me forcing me to wonder

feel like I just received an untold
message from beyond this day

well I’ve got one for you to bring
back to that place

a day that comes to mind right now

dear dad you gave me words
you called me out to speak when
I was small and interrupted by
my uncle at a crowded table

you calmly stopped him in his tracks
you said my daughter has a thought

and right then you broke my
silence right open forever

I have been flying since
