Remains
A poem by Lynn Kozlowski
Remains
(along Hadrian’s Wall, England)
He dies at a foreign outpost,
a fort,
and is buried there.
His friends go home.
His religion disappears.
Centuries pass.
Students with toothbrushes
scratch the grounds.
He is discovered.
A display is made.
His bones—
showing the height of a soldier—
are hung
beside the rings of his wife
and the hats of his friends.
