My Brownskin
A poem by Divine Time

My Brownskin

boys always claim how they love black girls & that they “don’t discriminate”
when there’s girls out there trynna imitate
yet no matter how many times i’ve tried
to be your ride or die
it was never enough for you to realize
to the girls with the light eyes & loose curly hair they had no problem being by your side
girls like me with my dark brownskin & kinky curly hair
spent their time wondering what was wrong with them
why we aren’t good enough for those same guys who “don’t discriminate”
they say “nothing you accept about yourself can be used against you to diminish you”
but you can’t let the stupid ways of the world finish you
with accepting yourself as you are takes time
cause girl you’re a dime plus 99
i have to remind myself to not let the stupid ways of the world diminish me because i’m who i’m supposed to be
