Transition of Heartbeats
A poem by Barry Lewis

Transition of Heartbeats

Small hands squeeze
last drops of fun
from summer—Sun
winks approval.

Trees, stairways
to adventure. Azure
sky, clouds, loose webbing
for picking apples.

Picnic remnants packed,
blanket stashed. Summer
sighs, twilight rushes
in sweet slumber. Today
instills euphoric memories.

Fall murmurs in your ear,
—I’m but a heartbeat away.
