Grave stone
A poem by Farideh Hassanzadeh
Grave stone
This is the only door
that will be closed to you forever.
Every time you bring a bouquet of flowers
there is no hand to take it,
to put it in a pot full of water.
Behind this closed door
even if you come a thousand times
no matter how much you cry
there is no heart left in the chest
to hear, to believe, to forgive you.
Behind this closed door
you are lost forever
you are alone forever
and you can do nothing anymore
but to wash your eyes
with the floods of tears
and to scatter flowers
on the gravestone
of your dearest loved ones.
Behind this closed door
is the only place in this world
that you wish you were more kind and generous.

Just yesterday , I visited my late husband in the peaceful cemetery –in the sun chilled afternoon– where his remains remain boxed underground. I tell him of his Grandson he never met who honors his name, news about our lives and repeat my regrets. I am sad. I am angry that cancer took him from us, too young, too soon. Seems moons ago. Seems only yesterday.
This poem is one I will memorize to keep in the lock box in my fragile fractured heart. Thank you.

This poem moved me so very deeply. Many years ago we lost our infant son and his burial date was 11th Dec. This poem inspired me to write a reply which I would have like to share privately with the author. However, I shall have to leave it at that letting you know that I was so deeply inspired as to write my response.
