intimacy and anonymity in economy
A poem by Ronald Zack
intimacy and anonymity in economy
After John Donne
There’s intimacy
flying in the cheap seats –
sharing recycled
cabin air like the bite of a
sonnet flea. Strangers oozing
over edges of seats
invading personal spaces,
thigh to thigh, arm to arm,
forming one turbulent
undulating mass careening
across the sky in blissless
harmony.
Outside, darkness carpets
cloud-tops high above the
unforgiving ocean with so
many secrets of its own.
Inside, strangers sleep together
dreaming of vanishing barriers,
skin to skin, they settle into
one another’s space,
exploring the deepest
rewards of nameless
possibilities.
