The Captain
A poem by Sahand Farivar

The Captain

You said you’d steer! The waves are tossing, man –
we don’t have time to teach you how to shift
the sea, not now, not here: it’s you who ran
to grip the wheel when mountains grew to lift
us up and drop us down. This world’s profound!
The more it moves the more we prove this dream
is real: each man stands on fulminous ground
and soars and crashes with the way things seem.
Your universe has changed. This storm will end
but in your soul its form will stay the same.
Illusions rise and any one can rend
to leave you gripping for it name by name.
The wheel in your hands is all you know:
ride high when seas ride high and low when low.
