Birthing A Poem
A poem by Kathryn Santana Goldman

Birthing A Poem

Conception
A warm tropical breeze
washes a seed of inspiration
upon naive sand.
Sirens lure me into swirling waters.
I merge with metaphors,
surrender to sonnets.
Spent,
I succumb
to the innocent structure
unfolding within me.

Gestation
Growth is stormy.
Each line, a rocky coast to be charted.
Similes elude me.
Rhymes hide in shadows.
Flickering visions of a destination
evaporate into morning fog.
I survive the turbulence.
A burning orange shoreline arises
marking an end and a beginning.

Delivery
I am midwife and mother.
From my depths
the newborn emerges.
I swaddle my offspring.
Delay exposure
to the harsh scrutiny
of sunlight and biting winds
that slice.

I relent,
loosen moorings,
and whisper bonne Journee.
