Building Plans
A poem by Nancy Tinnell

Building Plans

When blueprints are conceived with care
and components carefully pieced together,
the work of building the foundation begins;
a foundation that offers balance and heft;
a support to uphold all the weights and measures
as blueprints are translated into iron and steel.

Building a life is much the same.
We are always pulling ourselves together
using plans that rely on our core of strength;
that which sustains us when under pressure;
those things that will soften the sharpest angle;
girders of confidence so our lives cannot shatter

We know what they say about the best laid plans
but for buildings and people it is not quite the same.
We may look impervious and hard like metal,
but peel back the cover and see how we are made.
Note the soft pulsing tissue of a human heart.
It is here that our foundation starts.
