The Baby Quilt
A poem by Royal Rhodes
The Baby Quilt
You stitched an infant’s quilt,
a soft geometry
of love
in triangles of color.
Repeated block designs,
pinwheels of pretty cloth
petals
with threads of needle art.
Something sweet it whispers,
a lulling lullaby
for baby
and rocking rock-a-bye
repeats in present tense
as poets pointed out
is joy
illuminating time.
This bassinet remains —
we took this loving quilt
we touched
as we folded it with care,
but never used.
