A poem by Amrita Skye Blaine

allow

life can break us all—
do we curl in defense
pill bugs, frozen
in protection and fear
or allow the breaking,
stand vulnerable, raw
made softer
skinned by struggles
face-offs and losses?

pliant, available
a heart broken open
is willing to love
in the face of it—
my brothers, my sisters
scarred, accessible
and risen
