Impermanence
A poem by Barbara Cassidy
Impermanence
Opening the backdoor to
the quick breath of cool
the scent of rain
earthy dank new growth
familiar as
the stringent first hit of
the infant
the smell of death
bereavement
a lifetime in one
tingling inhale
wanting to sniff it down to zero
wanting to imprison memory
a lush exhale
the past dissipates
gone

“… the smell of death..” wanting to sniff it down to zero…”
Painful, raw and so very real. Thank you, Barbara, for palpably sharing your experience.

Your poem captures Fall beautifully. It is my favorite season. I live in NC and I have experienced your nostalgia in recent weeks where the colors are not quite changing but the cool air has arrived bringing with it, all the feelings that Fall evokes in me. Thank you!
