I want more from life than prancing, puffy years,
alligator smiles and hypnotic dreams,
killing a phrase for Wednesday’s garbage run.
I want to scrape life, deeper than words can lie.
They aren’t required to listen,
those expatriate brides of fiction,
take me at my word:
I am alive and I’m a sword.
