Three Friends and Three Gifts on an August Evening
A poem by Nancy L. Hausauer

Three Friends and Three Gifts on an August Evening

One gave me eggs–
green and tan and brown,
form perfect enough to live for,
but: you’re expected to ruin it.

The second shared figs,
those ovate purses of
inward-curling flowers,
fertilized by wasps who
shear off their own wings
to enter and die within.
Long story. High drama
even before my teeth sink
into their rosy flesh.

The third sat in the twilight
with their pink explosion of hair
inexplicably glowing.
