Mama where did the stars go?
A poem by Ahsia Patel

Mama where did the stars go?

you’ve always believed that the stars exist in the stars. they dance their song and go home when the moon says so. “mama, where did the stars go?” but the answer is in the stars speckled with innocent light. there is nothing to fear, she says and you choose to believe she’s right.

but you’re older now, smoking in someone’s driveway and your co-worker says, “look at the stars.” suddenly, all is forgotten and the fluttering gossip takes a break. you both look up and there they are, you can’t wait to tell mama they always come back.

he’s asking you to list all the zodiac signs and you say yours last, virgo. sure, you have the same birthday as a past situationship but you’re virgo’s on a spectrum. you cut your hair short and pay the nice lady who thinks you’re a nice lady. the stars won’t lie to you so you shake out your hair, cry out your mother’s name. a sparkle of innocence is all it takes and you’re spilling your secrets to the sky.
